Gamma-Glutamyl Transferase (GGT)

Gamma-Glutamyl Transferase (GGT) is an enzyme that works by helping move amino acids and other molecules across cell membranes, playing a key role in detoxification. It is most concentrated in the liver and bile ducts. When these tissues are stressed or damaged due to alcohol use, medications, bile duct obstruction, or metabolic conditions like fatty liver disease, GGT can leak into the bloodstream. Elevated levels are a sensitive indicator of liver strain, though not specific to a single disease. Clinicians typically interpret GGT alongside other liver enzymes (such as ALT and AST) to assess liver health and guide further evaluation. [67]
