Red Blood Cell Count

Red Blood Cell Count (RBC) measures the number of red blood cells, also known as erythrocytes, in the blood. Red blood cells are formed in the bone marrow, the spongy, fatty tissue inside large bones. These cells contain hemoglobin, an iron-rich protein that carries oxygen from the lungs to every cell in the body. Cells need oxygen to grow, reproduce, and transform energy for adequate function. An abnormal RBC count is often one of the first signs of illness. [74] [75]
