Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV)

Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV) quantifies the average size of circulating red blood cells and is measured as part of the Complete Blood Count (CBC). Clinically, the MCV aids in distinguishing different types of anemia and supports the assessment of bone marrow function. This is determined by whether red blood cells are undersized (microcytic), normal sized (normocytic), or oversized (macrocytic). Microcytic cells typically indicate iron deficient anemia while macrocytic cells can signal B12 deficient or folate deficient anemia. [75][76]
